Expertise in Every Aspect of treatments
For patients with end-stage liver disease, a liver transplant may be the best option when other treatments have not worked. Conditions commonly leading to a liver transplant include:
Severe liver cell damage that can lead to loss of function.
An infectious liver disease that can lead to complete liver failure.
Liver damage due to alcohol leads to scarring and cirrhosis
Fat build-up in the liver causing inflammation and liver cell damage.
Growth of cancer cells that disrupt liver function.
Our stomach cancer treatment program is designed to address the unique requirements of each patient based on the type and stage of cancer:
Transplanting a liver from a recently deceased donor.
A segment of the liver is taken from a living donor, often a relative, and both livers regenerate to full size.
A deceased donor’s liver is divided between two recipients, with each part regrowing to normal size in each patient.
Health assessments and blood/urine tests to monitor organ function.
Liver ultrasound and abdominal CT scans to assess liver health.
Evaluates cardiovascular and respiratory function to ensure surgery readiness.
Psychological evaluations to confirm transplant readiness and nutritional counselling to ensure proper dietary intake before and after surgery.
The liver transplant surgery at RPS Hospitals involves several key stages to ensure a successful transplant:
Patients are placed under anesthesia to ensure comfort.
An abdominal incision, typically L or Mercedes Benz-shaped, is made to access the liver.
The abdomen is inspected, and the native liver is mobilised.
Blood arteries and bile ducts are reconnected to ensure optimal function after the diseased liver is removed and the new liver is positioned.
After ensuring the liver is functioning well, the incision is closed.
Following surgery, patients are monitored in the ICU for a short period before moving to a regular ward. In the ICU, regular blood tests and assessments are conducted to ensure the liver is functioning well and other vital organs, such as the kidneys and lungs, are healthy. Anti-rejection medications are provided, carefully managed, and adjusted to ensure a smooth adaptation to the new liver.
Once patients are stable, they are transferred to a regular ward where activity gradually increases, helping them regain strength and independence as they progress toward recovery.
Life post-transplant involves maintaining regular follow-ups and adopting certain lifestyle changes to ensure long-term health and transplant success:
These are frequent at first and tapering over time. Follow-ups allow us to monitor liver health and overall recovery.
These medications prevent the body from rejecting the new liver and are essential for successful recovery.
Patients must avoid alcohol and adhere to a nutritious diet, ensuring their new liver functions optimally.
